a different kind of distance

There's a moment that happens out here when you realize just how far you've come.

Not metaphorically. Literally.

There is an awful lot of ocean between you and whatever you left back home.

And strangely, that distance starts to feel really fucking good.

Your world gets smaller for a while. The weather. The water. What's for dinner. Whether you should wander into town or stay exactly where you are.

Days start being measured by different things.

Market mornings. Warm rain. Hours in the water. Roads that don't seem particularly interested in getting anywhere quickly. A conversation that lasted longer than expected.

Maybe a sunset you didn't photograph because for once, you forgot you had a phone.

You're a long way from home.

You might be suprised how little you miss the distance.

between the islands

There is a particular kind of distance here.

Not the kind measured only in miles, but in long stretches of ocean, changing light, unfamiliar constellations, and the strange realization that home is very, very far away.

Out here, the journey between places becomes part of the wandering. A flight over scattered islands. A ferry crossing blue water. A road disappearing between mountains. An afternoon when absolutely nothing happens except the tide coming back in.

Notice....

how enormous the horizon feels.

Notice...

how differently each island carries its culture, even when the ocean between them looks the same.

Notice...

how quickly you stop needing every hour to have a plan.

Somewhere between one shore and the next, the distance begins to feel less like something to cross - and more like part of the reason you came.

Some places feel far away until you get there.

Others remind you just how big the world still is.

The South Pacific does a little of both.
